The Reviews for Escobar: Paradise Lost (2014) 1080p

Del Toro's big head is on the poster but your there to see Hutcherson.Reviewed bysubxerogravityVote: 7/10

Josh Hutcherson plays a surfer living in Colombia, who falls in love with a girl whose uncle is a politician attracted to drug trafficking, played by Benicio del Toro.

It's a dark tale about getting caught up with the wrong crowd and not being able to get out. The moral of the story is there but I really got nothing out of it.

A period piece set in the 80s, the movie does feel a little chopped together. A lot of Background story seems to go by so fast that I barely notice it from all the one-liners used to tell it.

But the hunger games star showed he could front a movie. He was charming and capable of a lot of dramatic tension. Good for him that he does have a seasoned award winning actor like Del Toro supporting him in this movie, but for the most part the whole thing falls on Josh's performance and he came through for me by getting me all up in his situation.

Depending on weather you like or dislike Hutcherson, or like me, don't have any feeling for him at all either way, will sway your opinion on the movie. The story is weak and the film making is very centered on the leading man's ability to make you like him.

Andrea Di Stefano's impressive debut as a directorReviewed bymabulmarulandaVote: 7/10

In the film Escobar: Paradise Lost, the editing generates excitement and anxiety, creating an interesting and spacial style that reflects a cinematic signature for Andrea Di Stefano's impressive debut as a director. In addition, the hand held camera movement in every scene makes us feel emotions and sensations from Nick's (Josh Hutcherson) point of view throughout the narrative. Furthermore, the very well detailed mis-en-scence reveals thorough study and research of locations, props, and costumes; intensity of colors and light in each frame are magnificent. Moreover, the efficient use of foreground, middle-ground, and background from beginning to end demonstrates a well-designed piece of art. In the plot, we find murder, corrupt governmental, news, and prison systems, a love story, and a web of lies crafted by power-hungry Pablo Escobar (Benicio Del Toro). It was important for the form not to get in the way of the content in order tell the story in a realistic way, involve the audience, and help them understand the social structure of Colombia at that time. Nick is the most important character in this love story, and he is an innocent victim, used as a marionette by Escobar, the world's most dangerous person.

Competent but proformaReviewed byjcaliendo-104-917650Vote: 5/10

An OK film, but not a great film.

A bit too movie-of-the-week 'by the numbers' even for a risk-averse first time director. Lot's of potential for crackling drama + tension but we don't really experience any until the 3rd act and even then it seems proforma.

It is supposed to be based upon "true events" but the film ends without any explanation as to what happened to the main characters.

Benicio del Toro steals every scene and without him this would be a 3. Josh Hutcherson seems to struggle with the role playing someone who is (sort of) struggling with his conscience. The rest of the key supporting cast are cyphers with the exception of Carlos Bardem who nails the role of Drago.
